3. 1973 to 1976

Acrylic on canvas (1 to 5)
Hemlock sculpture (6)

The following quotation is from notes Wardy wrote about his work during the mid-1970s, when he created the works in Categories 3 and 4: “My work is about line—color line—lines on lines—lines next to lines—lines under lines—colors next to colors—changing colors—one line is not enough—enough is many.”

Wardy made the large sculpture (6) for the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira, New York, in the summer of 1974. He and museum staff members built it on the museum’s property after he selected the quality of hemlock he wanted to use. While artist-in-residence at the museum, Wardy gave instructions on sculpture techniques.
