29. ca. 2010 to the present
Acrylic and gouache on canvas (1 to 7)
Gouache on paper, in some cases also with painting crayon, wax pastel crayon, and/or lead pencil (8 to 67, 76, 77) (also with archival tape, 68 to 75)
Although the works in this long series share some general characteristics, the choices of color, the variety in the shapes, the horizontal movements of the larger swathes of color, and the changing smaller strokes and lines reflect differing decisions made during the creation of each. The result is considerable individuality, heightened by the variety of mediums. Although full of energy, no piece was done quickly. Sometimes the recent application of a medium dried while a second work was in progress. Occasionally such works have a similar palette, as with numbers 9 and 10.
These selections include works done in New York City, Washington, and in Long Beach, California. The paintings date before the works on paper. A photograph of Wardy at a work table in Long Beach in 2016 shows a work on paper in progress and some of the many paint tubes on hand (Profile, Fig. 14). Taken in the same location, Fig. 15 captures another work of this style in progress.
Numbers 76 and 77 are selections from Wardy’s latest works on paper. The column of color looks back to sculptures and works on paper in Category 22. Number 77 comes from a group of small works with white archival tape, barely noticeable in the photograph.
